Custom Lifting Belts for Women: When Off-the-Shelf Cannot Fit

There is a group of lifters for whom the entire off-the-shelf market simply does not work: waist under about 23 inches, or a rib-to-hip gap under about 7.5 inches, or both. Every 4-inch belt is too tall and every size run bottoms out above your measurement.

A custom belt fixes it by being cut to your numbers. The catch is that custom orders are generally final sale, so the measuring has to be right the first time.

Our picks: custom belts

Each belt holds one slot. Where a belt has a real drawback for this use case, it is stated on the same card.

Cut Custom Belt

Ordered to your measurements with the height you specify. A 3-inch or tapered cut solves the short-torso problem that no off-the-shelf 4-inch belt can. You also choose the leather, the stitching and the artwork.

What works

  • Height, circumference, thickness and closure are all specified by you
  • Tapered cut narrows at the front so it does not fold into the hip crease
  • Available in IPF-legal configurations

What does not

  • Multi-week build and shipping lead time
  • Custom orders are generally not returnable. Your measurements have to be right
  • The most expensive route to a first belt

The measurements to send

Waist circumference at navel height. Bare skin or a thin layer, tape snug but not compressing, normal exhale, standing relaxed. This sets the belt circumference.

Rib to iliac crest, seated. Find your lowest rib on one side and the top ridge of your hip bone below it. Measure the vertical gap while seated upright, since that is closer to your position at the bottom of a squat than standing is. This sets the belt height.

Your intended lifts. A belt cut for a sumo deadlifter is not the same shape as one cut for a high-bar squatter. Say what you are buying it for.

What to specify

  • Height: 3 inches if your seated rib-to-hip gap is under about 8.5 inches, 4 inches above that.
  • Taper: a front narrower than the back, if you pull sumo or the belt currently catches your hip crease.
  • Thickness: 10mm for almost everyone, 13mm only if you have plateaued against a broken-in 10mm belt.
  • Closure: single prong for adjustability, lever for repeatable competition tightness.
  • Lining: suede or rough-out, so it grips fabric instead of sliding into your ribs.

Cost, lead time and the returns problem

Custom belts typically run from around $130 into the $200s depending on leather, hardware and artwork, and lead times of several weeks are normal because the belt is cut after you order.

Because each belt is made to one person's numbers, most makers do not accept returns on fit. That is reasonable, and it puts the responsibility on your measuring. If you are uncertain, buy a cheap 3-inch nylon belt first, train in it for a month, and use what you learn about height and placement to specify the custom order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a custom lifting belt worth it?
It is worth it if off-the-shelf belts genuinely do not fit you. A waist under about 23 inches, or a rib-to-hip gap under about 7.5 inches, where every 4-inch belt is too tall. If a standard belt fits you acceptably, a custom belt buys aesthetics and marginal refinement for two to four times the price.
How do I measure for a custom lifting belt?
Take two measurements. Waist circumference at navel height, bare skin, tape snug but not compressing, normal exhale, standing relaxed. That sets the circumference. Then the vertical gap between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone while seated upright. That sets the height. Measure seated because it approximates your position at the bottom of a squat.
Can a custom belt be IPF approved?
Yes, if you order an approved configuration from a maker whose belts are on the federation's list. Confirm this at order time rather than assuming. A custom cut that exceeds 10cm width or 13mm thickness will not pass equipment check regardless of who made it.
How long does a custom lifting belt take to arrive?
Several weeks is normal, because the belt is cut and assembled after you order. Add shipping time on top. Plan around a meet date rather than ordering a month out.

Where to go next, depending on what you are still deciding.
